Sauzon–Les Poulains–Ster Vraz Hike

A walk to unveil all of Sauzon’s emblematic sites.

You’ve just arrived in Sauzon and wish to set out on the coastal trails? Starting in Sauzon, this trail concentrates the Belle Ile experience to merely 12km, ranging from the calm and greenery of the soft, interior coast to the tall, jagged cliffs facing the vastness of the Atlantic on the “Wild” coast. The coastal trail leading toward the Pointe des Poulains reveals a number of idyllic small coves and sandy beaches along the Northern Coast. After approximately 1.5 hours of walking along a hilly 5.5 km route, you’ll reach the Pointe des Poulains, Belle-Ile’s crown jewel.

Good to know !

Everything you need to know about La Pointe des Poulains, its museums and points of interest.

At Les Poulains, you have the possibility of taking the bus and reaching Sauzon or the bus station of Le Palais.

Are you a seasoned walker? Then why not continue your trek along the island’s rugged coastline! From the heights of the rocky plateau, take in spectacular views of the Atlantic and the jagged cliffs that define Belle-Île’s western edge. After a 3 km walk, you’ll reach the stunning Ster Vraz beach tucked away in its protected cove.

A spacious extent of sand and shingle, tucked beneath towering cliffs, Ster Vraz is an idyllic spot for a swim or a paddle board or kayak excursion. Ster Vraz also serves as a natural harbour, often harbouring boats seeking refuge from the open sea’s rougher waters.

Finish your walk with a 2 km route along country lanes and farm tracks, back towards Sauzon’s charming harbour.

Fishing in Sauzon Harbour

Discover Traditional Fishing Techniques

Learn about an ancestral Breton fishing technique without venturing out to sea: “Balance” Fishing! At lower tides from the quays of Sauzon’s estuary, throw your circular “Balance” net into the water, wait for it to settle on the bottom, then pull it out rapidly, catching smaller creatures such as small crabs, grey shrimps, and other small sea life in the process.
The estuary is also ideal for shore fishing at low tide, presenting wide mud flats teeming with shellfish and crustaceans: clams, cockles, crabs and shrimps aplenty! So why not give it a go and collect dinner directly from the source?

Enjoy a peaceful moment

In Sauzon

After a good walk, there are few things more appreciable than a good drink and an ice cream on the quays. Luckily for you, a number of restaurants, bars and kiosks along Sauzon’s quays offer just that and more! Crêpes, waffles, Bellilois Apple cider, and craft beers await, along with a stunning view over Sauzon’s delightful harbour, lined with a rainbow of colourful houses specific to Belle-Île. From the comfort of your table, watch the graceful ballet of the port as fishing vessels and motor yachts manoeuvre around wooden sailing ships of old.
