by Patrick JONVEAUX, vice-president of the Historical Society of Belle Île en mer, retired history and geography teacher. Belle-Île has been a major strategic issue for centuries. An officer of the Engineers wrote in 1819: "Belle-Île is the most important point on the French border on the ocean". From the 16th century until the 1940s, the Engineers shaped this immense "war square". Fortifications were erected, from simple earth parapets to masonry constructions, the road network was redesigned, paths ran along the coast and guardhouses were set up to warn of the arrival of an enemy fleet, the town of Palais was transplanted. Some works fit into the landscape, remaining invisible. Did you know that on the coast or beach, the cliff or slopes are steep to prevent climbing during a landing? We invite you to discover the shaping of the landscape by the Genius. At 6 p.m., Cinema Le Petit Bal Perdu, Le Palais. Free entry for UTL members – €5 for non-members.
