The Cagots and Agotes existed in certain regions of France and Spain for almost a millennium. They constituted a category of people considered as pariahs; a sort of "cursed race" that experienced until the middle of the 19th century, harassment and exclusion like the Indian pariahs or the Japanese burakumin. They had a very strict status everywhere and were kept away from the community. They lived outside the villages, were separated in churches and cemeteries, were only allowed to practice trades related to wood, iron, hemp. They were therefore carpenters, wheelwrights, blacksmiths, ropemakers or weavers… Even today the history of the Cagots and Agotes is full of enigmas and controversies to be clarified. Gérard Lamarque is a retired engineer from the Atomic Energy Commission. He chairs an artistic and cultural association and organizes scientific and historical conferences. At 6 p.m., Hospital Center, village square, Le Palais. Free entry for UTL members – €5 for non-members.
