Meet Sarah Bernhardt! The tragic actress Sarah Bernhardt discovered Belle-Île in 1894, at the age of 50. Her friend, the painter Clairin, told her so much about it that she finally decided to accompany him. Under the effect of a real thunderbolt, she acquired a disused military fort at Pointe des Poulains. For thirty years, she will stay there, each year, to escape the trying Parisian life and rest there, escorted by a crowd of artists and personalities. She will leave her dear point in 1922, after a final stay, where sick and infirm, she puts her properties up for sale. She died in Paris the following year without having been able to realize her last wish to rest for eternity facing the sea, on this island that she loved so much. A real journey into the past The current site of La Pointe des Poulains has been the property of the Conservatoire du Littoral since 2000, managed by the Community of Communes of Belle-Ile-en-Mer (CCBI) and is listed as a Historic Monument. Since April 2007, the Espace Sarah Bernhardt has been inviting you to dive back into the past with an audioguided tour lasting approximately one hour (paying). The life and work of the tragic actress are retraced in the villa, while the interior of the fort has been identically refurbished. You can choose to visit only the fort even if we recommend the audio-guided dive in the atmosphere of the summer holidays of Sarah, her family and her friends. It is a place imbued with great serenity: a must stopover during your stay. Guided tours are offered during opening hours. Go to the Agenda section!
