Le Grand Phare

It is a granite tower of 52 meters and 92 meters above the sea adjoining the technical and residential buildings of the guards. The tower was built from 1826 to 1835, according to the project of the physicist Augustin Fresnel, chief engineer and secretary of the Lighthouse Commission in Paris. Its range is approximately 27 miles, making it one of the most powerful in Europe. It is a State property which has been classified as a Historic Monument since May 23, 2011. Go up there! After 247 steps, discover the most breathtaking view of Belle-île. On the ground floor, a permanent exhibition covers different themes: the administration and history of lighthouses, the job of keepers, markings and natural spaces. Visit to the Grand Lighthouse: 20 min + free visit to the exhibition (last entry 30 mins before closing). Limited seats. Without reservation. Guided tours are offered during opening times.
